A Typical Class
Learning Target/Success Criteria Self-Evaluation
I review the LT/SC for each week at the beginning of the hour. Students track their progress toward mastery of these criteria each day on the top of their bell work page (see Planning and Preparation).
Bell Work (Trabajo del Timbre)
Students complete a short (5-8 question) bell work to begin class and get them in the mindset of the subject. It is at this time that the Student Dojo checks students in and I am able to conference with students before reviewing homework.

Mini-Lesson
I include a mini-lesson of one new topic each day that includes a mixture of review, teacher-lead examples and gradual release of responsibility through guided notes. Culture is often integrated into the discussion of language. Click on the images below for lesson examples.

Student Workshop
Students begin working on the new topic independently or with a partner while I conference with specific students who need or seek intervention. Click on the images below for lesson examples.

Project Based Learning
Below are some examples of students working on projects that familiarize themselves with Spanish language, vocabulary and culture.

Cultural Lessons
Salsa Dancer
If you can't bring the students to the culture, bring the culture to the students! We had the pleasure of hosting María, a salsa dancer from Colombia. My students enjoyed María's lesson on Colombia and the art of Salsa Dancing. They had the opportunity to learn basic and more advanced moves, and get some exercise! |
Field Trips
Students in my advanced class will enjoy an afternoon at the Detroit Institute of Arts to see the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibit. They will also enjoy authentic Spanish Tapas at La Fería in Midtown Detroit, as well as participate in a Spanish scavenger shopping hunt at La Colmena. |
Holiday Lessons
With at least one major Spanish holiday each month, students are often learning about fiestas all over the globe. To support our School Improvement Plan to improve student reading, I have adapted English articles for each grade level, with a different form of note-taking. Students receive reading support with cultural videos for each holiday, and discussion with their peers. Click on the images below for lesson examples.
