Spanish Language and Culture in Valencia, Spain
In the summer of 2011, I spent 9 weeks studying in Valencia, Spain. I lived with a host mother and Spartan roommate, and attended classes with other Spartans through a "Spanish-only" University of Virginia school. My professors were all native Spanish speakers, having grown up in Spain, and we were even forbidden to speak English while in the school building.
Not only did I gain more proficiency in the language, but I learned more about myself as a person, and my teaching philosophy. I learned how important it is for students to be exposed to other languages and cultures, as it promotes tolerance and acceptance in our ever-globalizing world. Because of this study abroad experience, I plan to utilize the Spanish language and teach international concerns (as well as those on our home soil) in my classroom. I love Spanish because it has not only taught me more about other languages and practices, but also given me a better understanding of my own language and beliefs.
I encourage you to take a look at some of my favorite photos from the experience.

Cross-Cultural Teaching Abroad in Cape Town, South Africa
After my experience in Spain, I knew that I had to know more about education outside of the United States. I encourage you to read my scholarship essay below, that discusses my decision to attend this trip, in order to become a global educator.
